Eagle Rising Information Security

Eagle Rising Information Security is an initiative to develop curriculum to help bring cybersecurity education to schools for students in grades 6-12. The main goal of this initiative is to facilitate formal cybersecurity education in the classroom as well as to foster individual life-long learning through free and low-cost educational online materials accessible to everyone regardless of age.

About Me

My name is Tom. I'm a father of four and a retired Army veteran. After I retired from the Army in 2022, I worked as a penetration tester/security consultant for a few years before gravitating toward the study of learning and teaching. I'm particularly interested in learning more about pedagogical approaches to make cybersecurity education accessible for everyone.

I consider myself a life-long student and look forward to sharing my journey in cybersecurity, physical and mental health, and teaching.

Away from the computer I enjoy the outdoors (hiking, cycling), spending time with my family, and coaching my kids' sports teams.

My Philosophy

  • Cybersecurity can be learned. Nobody is born just knowing any of this. If the best in the field could do it, so can we.

  • Don't feel the need to fit yourself into someone else's learning style. Find what works for YOU and stick with it!

  • Try to get 1% better every day and compare your skills today against your skills yesterday. Comparing yourself against others robs us of the joy of learning.

  • Don't dwell on past mistakes and don't stress about what you'll do in the future. Just be present and focus on the now.
